5 Ways to Support Your Local LGBTQ+ Community

Do you feel inspired to pitch in and help the LGBTQ+ community? Maybe you identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, or you have loved ones who have come out as LGBTQ+. Either way, there is plenty that you can do to show your support! Today, Pink Media shares some tips for supporting the LGBTQ+ community, like establishing your own nonprofit or starting a social group.

Start Your Own Nonprofit

What if you’re interested in volunteering but you can’t find any reputable organizations in your area that support the LGBTQ+ community? You could always start your own! With nonprofit status for your organization, you can easily apply for grants and other sources of public funding so that you’ll have the financial resources necessary to run your programs.

Once you establish your nonprofit corporation, it’s time to spread the word! You can create great online content for a website and social media. Effective content is meant to not only inform others of your cause, but to drive traffic to your website, so prioritize SEO to rank higher in search engines.

Advocate for LGBTQ+ Seniors

Concerned citizens can advocate for inclusive policies and practices within nursing homes to ensure LGBTQ+ seniors receive respectful and affirming care. They can also volunteer their time to provide companionship, support, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ seniors who may feel isolated or marginalized. Supporting organizations that specialize in LGBTQ+ elder rights and providing financial assistance for programs aimed at addressing their unique needs are also impactful ways to help.

Plan a Voter Registration Drive

Are you interested in politics? Lots of people in the LGBTQ+ community are passionate about supporting politicians who fight for their rights, but people don’t always know how to get involved. You may want to host a voter registration drive in your city. By holding a voter registration drive, you can help your friends and neighbors get registered to vote! Voter registration drives aren’t geared towards supporting specific candidates or policies, but those who participate in one may feel more motivated to pitch in with political campaigns in the future.

Host Regular Social Gatherings

Perhaps you just want to create a space where LGBTQ+ people can get together, make new friends, and feel truly safe. Starting your own social club could be a great idea! If you want to form a social club, Group Works recommends getting a friend involved to help plan and host gatherings – trying to do everything by yourself can become overwhelming. You can advertise your group online and by putting up flyers in local cafes and businesses!

Schedule an Open Mic

People from marginalized communities often have trouble expressing themselves. Many LGBTQ+ people suppress their honest thoughts and feelings for years out of fear that they won’t be accepted. You can help people tap into their creativity and get comfortable with authentic self-expression by hosting open mics!

If you have enough space at home, you could host a small open mic in your backyard or in your living room. Alternatively, if you live in a small apartment, you could reach out to a local restaurant or coffee shop about hosting an open mic there. Music Gateway recommends setting up a reliable audio and tech system to ensure that everything runs smoothly and advertising your event on social media.

Support Your LGBTQ+ Community!

Perhaps you’ve been trying to find your place as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, or you want to help your loved ones embrace their true selves. There are plenty of ways to take action! Let these tips inspire you to create a nonprofit, bring people together at social gatherings, or even facilitate a voter registration drive.
