Unique overnight camp now accepting reservations for queer, questioning and gender
fluid youth aged 14-18
Parents of LGBTQ teens aged 14-18 can register their children to attend the new Spring Camp run by Camp Lightbulb in New York City. The 2-day, overnight camp begins the morning of Saturday, March 31, continuing into the evening of Sunday, April 1. The deadline to register is Monday, March 5 with attendance limited to 15.
“Growing up LGBTQ can be tough,” says Puck Markham, founder of Camp Lightbulb. “We offer a special place for LGBTQ teens to have a positive camp experience surrounded by peers and role models as they figure out who they truly are.”
The Spring Camp will explore gender identity in a myriad of ways. The itinerary includes: a discussion of gender identity (celebrities expected), a screening of Paris Is Burning, the legendary 1990 documentary on drag balls, a kid-friendly vogue ball (with voguing workshop), attending the city’s world famous Easter Parade along Fifth Avenue (with bonnet-making workshop prior) and a matinee performance of Kinky Boots on Broadway, followed by cast meet-and-greet backstage.
The $450 cost to attend includes meals, accommodation and activities, but excludes transportation and pocket money, and financial aid is always available. Licensed, experienced counselors will be on staff with accommodations provided by Hostelling International’s New York City Hostel, a facility with 24-hour round-the-clock security located on the Upper West Side.
