Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs LGBTQ Film Festival Celebrates Ten Years; Opens with Armistead Maupin Documentary

Maupin to Attend Opening Night Screening; Sign Copies of New Memoir

Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs LGBTQ Film Festival (Cinema Diverse), which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, will open with The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin – the new documentary about the beloved writer of the Tales of the City novels, which were set in San Francisco, beginning in the mid-seventies and continuing through 2010. Armistead Maupin is set to attend the opening night event, where he will participate in a Q&A, receive a lifetime achievement award, and sign copies of his upcoming memoir, Logical Family: A Memoir, which will not otherwise be available until October.

Cinema Diverse opens on Thursday, September 21st and continues through Sunday, September 24th at the Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs. The following weekend, a special Best of Fest celebration will take place at the Mary Pickford Theatres, with screenings on Friday, September 29th and Saturday, September 30th.

“We are excited about the number of award-winning LGBTQ films that have come out this year,” said Michael C. Green, Cinema Diverse Festival Director and Executive Director of the Palm Springs Cultural Center. “These films are not just attracting the notice of festivals like Sundance, Tribeca and SXSW, they are also winning awards at those festivals. It’s exciting to see the genre continue to grow, and gain traction among mainstream audiences.”

Cinema Diverse is one of several niche film festivals owned and operated by The Palm Springs Cultural Center, a local nonprofit that was established in 2007 by local philanthropists Ric and Rozene Supple to encourage the development of the cultural arts in the Coachella Valley with a specific focus in the areas of film, fine art, live performance, and community festivals.

ABOUT THE FILM:
THE UNTOLD TALES OF ARMISTEAD MAUPIN examines the life and work of one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, following his evolution from a conservative son of the Old South into a gay rights pioneer whose novels have inspired millions to claim their own truth. Jennifer Kroot’s documentary about the creator of Tales Of The City moves nimbly between playful and poignant and laugh-out-loud funny. With help from his friends (including Neil Gaiman, Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis, Sir Ian McKellen and Amy Tan), Maupin offers a disarmingly frank look at the journey that took him from the jungles of Vietnam to the bathhouses of 70’s San Francisco to the front line of the American culture war.
